Utah cities starting to consider lifestyles when approving developments – Salt Lake Tribune

BYU students look at Utah cities that have a population that is over 5,000. The study wants to know if cities are starting to pass ordinances that are positive for healthier lifestyles. Saratoga Springs does not have all of the suggested ordinances, but was mentioned as an innovator. “Saratoga Springs requires pedestrian connections between adjoining developments…”

The study looked into the cities to see if they meet the following criteria:
“» Require sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways and recreational facilities for new, redeveloped and mixed-use communities;
» Require new commercial buildings to encourage physical activity and bicycle and pedestrian commuter traffic;
» Require recreational shared-use paths that combine biking and walking.”
