Candidate Question – Conclusion/Unasked Question

Posted By Mike Kieffer on October 15, 2009

Final Question: What other question should of been asked, and what is your response? I have also included any conculsion that they have supplied after the questions as well in this post.

Jeff Francom – Mayor

Why am I running? I love this city and believe that we need to continue to implement strict financial discipline so that we can achieve all the positives that our city has waiting for us.

Mia Love – Mayor

This question would be, how do you envision our future? My answer is that I believe Saratoga Springs is unlike any other city in Utah County. Saratoga Springs is a city with unique recreational and commercial growth opportunities. We are at a critical time were we have the opportunity to mold the future of Saratoga Springs.

First, I believe that our lake front location provides us with opportunities to bring the lake into our city. Many of our current residents use the lake for water recreation. I would like those recreational opportunities to be available to all residence and attract those outside of our city. In addition to water recreation, the lake provides opportunities for beautiful parks and trails that will promote our healthy and active lifestyle.

Second, I believe we have the opportunity to attract a healthy commercial base. We are now seeing the widening of State roads and the creation of new roads within our city. Our current Mayor and City Council have worked hard to make this happen. With these new and planned transportation routes, developers are looking at our city as a viable place to make money. (Wal-Mart came to Saratoga Springs when we were small and had limited road access). This is the time when I as your Mayor will be proactive working with land owners and developer that I have built relationships with. Together we will work to attract commercial that will benefit our residents and provide a healthy revenue source for our city.

This is the vision for our city. We have great people and this is a special place. Soon people will not only live here, but many of us will work here, shop here, find entertainment here, and love living here even more than we do today. Together, with careful planning and hard work, there is no doubt that we can make this vision into a reality. I am ready with the tools and experience I’ve gained over the years and I will be honored to start working as your Mayor.

Michael McOmber – City Council Member

No additional questions.

Conclusion:
You can feel secure that when you vote for Michael McOmber you are voting for a man of integrity who wants to make our city a wonderful place to raise our families. If anyone would like to discuss these or any other questions in greater detail, please email me at michaelmcomber@yahoo.com and we can get together and do so. Thank you.

Jim Miller – City Council Member

I believe that it is important to be involved in the community wherever it may be. My ability to listen to people and identify workable solutions will be a great asset to the city. I have a levelheaded approach to challenges and am willing to listen to all sides of an issue. My friends and family describe me as a very ambitious and determined individual who once I have set my mind to something, I work hard to make things happen.

Michael Simpson – City Council Member

Can services like a library and senior center be provided by a fiscally conservative city?

Yes, I think the key with these and other services is starting out small but plan for growth. It is important to remember what size of a city we are and add services accordingly. This is a great time to use creative thinking and resource pooling to provide solutions. We can use what we have now to start providing some library and senior center services today and have a plan for responsible growth as we head into the future.

Cecil Tuley – City Council Member

Q. Other than the city council meetings you may have attended since declaring a candacy for the council, what involvement have you had in the city’s governmental process over the past three years.

A. (same as paragraph 3 of question #4.) I have been directly involved in political matters and public service in Saratoga Springs for almost seven years, serving as a volunteer neighborhood representative arguing several matters of interest from Lake Mountain residents before the planning commission and city council. As part of the process of representing my neighborhood and maintaining my interest in how our community is developing, I have consistently attended city council work sessions and regular meetings for much of the past six and a half years. I also attended planning commissions meetings regularly during the first three and a half years. I have argued several issues before the council and have offered many suggestions during meetings, especially when the issues are related to residents’ concerns about issues that adversely affect them. I have volunteered as coordinator for the development of neighborhood parks for the past year. Since volunteering for the parks development projects I have helped get three parks completed, am currently supervising two more nearly completed park projects, and I have proposed development plans for three more parks in our community. One of those parks would be a regional park for team sports. The parks work has resulted in several boys earning their Eagle Scout awards. The boys have helped me organize neighborhoods into work crews for the placing of many acres of sod grass and hundreds of trees. I have a proven record of selfless service that I plan to continue to offer our community.

My conclusion rests in my record, and that is at least partially explained in item 3 and 10. Please refer to those items again and note that I have been a person of action and service. I would like to continue in that vein for a term as city councilman.

I am not editing any of the responses. They are being posted as I received them from the candidates.

  1. Charl says:

What are the candidates plans as far as treating the City employees fairly–planning for increased compensation, benefits and continuing education opportunities in the future, so we have a work force that is competent and happy to work for the City?

Do they feel it is okay to balance the budget on the employees? When is it fair to raise taxes to compensate for inflation, which will likely happen sometime during their service?

I am afraid some candidates will treat the employees horribly to avoid trying to explain tax increases to the community.
